Internet Advent Calendar, Day 4: Hot Chocolate

Hot Chocolate

Warm up with homemade hot chocolate! There’s almost nothing better than a huge mug of creamy hot chocolate, and I’m sharing with you my special recipe!

As the weather gets colder, it’s more often than not that I find myself reaching for a warm beverage to keep my hands warm. Hot chocolate is one of my favorite things to drink during the winter, and if you love chocolate as much as I do then I think you will enjoy this recipe very much! The quantities may not be super precise since I usually just eyeball everything and go by taste, so feel free to adjust the recipe to meet your needs in terms of sweetness/creaminess. Also, this recipe should work just fine for a single serving of hot chocolate, but it will also work for larger batches if you simply adjust the quantities as needed!

Creamy Homemade Hot Chocolate

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk (whole for richer, milk substitute like soy milk or almond milk works well, too!)
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/8 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp cream
  • pinch of salt
  • cool whip or whipped cream (optional)

Directions

  1. In saucepan on medium-low heat, slowly warm milk.
  2. Once milk is warm, vigorously whisk in cocoa powder, sugar, and salt until free of lumps.
  3. Add vanilla and cream.
  4. Stirring occasionally, gradually heat everything without bringing the mixture to a boil and without scalding the milk.
  5. When you see a little bit of steam coming from the surface and notice that your kitchen smells AMAZING, take it off the heat, pour into a mug, and top with whipped cream or cool whip!

One thing I wanted to mention is that you should definitely NOT skip adding the salt and vanilla extract, even if you think you’ll hate it. These two ingredients really help round out and enhance the chocolatey flavor! If you want to get even crazier with the recipe, might I suggest dusting cinnamon over your whipped cream? However you decide to spice up my creamy hot chocolate recipe, I hope you enjoy it!

See you tomorrow for Day 5 of #InternetAdvent!
